The park is one of the oldest in the state, and is named in honor of don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Mexico’s founding father.

The park has an area set aside for the rehabilitation of wildlife such as deer, hawks and eagles.
The park was opened in 1964 by President Adolfo López Mateos. In the 1990s an open-air forum was added for the presentation of artistic activities, which was recently refurbished – a new renaissance for the park.
