The local origins of baseball go back to the railroad era, when the Americans who worked on the Mexican Central Railroad began to play the game for sport and fun in their free time.
Locals gradually got interested and every Sunday the crowd that gathered to watch the game between the Mexican and American railroad workers grew.
It got so popular that engineers and workers went about digging out a baseball ground in the Ferronales neighborhood. In 1930 the Caldereros baseball team was formed; led by Antíoco Ramírez, it was the source of great local pride.
However, it wasn’t until 1975 that the Rieleros team was officially formed. After consulting fans about the name, they plumped for Rieleros over the two other choices – gallos and toros.
They debuted in 1975 and, after more than thirty seasons, the Rieleros have had some fabulous times and left an indelible mark on the hearts of locals.
